Sarah Champion MP slams deliberate attempt to stop her gender pay transparency Bill
Sarah Champion, Member of Parliament for Rotherham, has strongly criticised the Government for kicking her recent motion for gender pay equality into the long grass. On December 16th, Sarah tabled a Ten Minute Rule Bill in the House of Commons as part of the continued fight against pay inequality for women. In it she demanded that companies with more than 250 employees publish figures on their pay gap between men and women.
The proposed Bill was passed with overwhelming support as 258 voted in favour, the majority of whom were Labour MPs. Most coalition members stayed away from the debate, although 7 Conservatives did decide to vote against the seminal Bill.
A second reading had been planned for next week, on the 27th February, but the Government scheduled it as the 16th bill to be read, meaning in reality it would never get called.
