Sarah Champion MP Statement on Sentencing of Nazir Ahmed

“Today’s sentence is a testament to the courage, bravery and determination of the victims of Nazir Ahmed. I want to pay tribute to the survivors and offer my profound sympathy for all that they have endured.’

‘The verdict in this case sends a clear message to offenders; no matter your power or your status, justice will be served, however long it is eluded.’

‘The fact Mr Ahmed is able to retain his peerage makes a mockery of our honours system. I urge the government to bring forward legislation to enable his title to be stripped from him. This is important not least as his survivors need to know that he cannot benefit by presenting as a peer of the realm.’

‘There remains much work to be done to ensure that our child protection systems are robust, that all perpetrators are pursued with the full force of the law and that comprehensive support is provided to victims and survivors of abuse. I will continue to do whatever I can to ensure that they are.”
