Sarah Champion MP Reacts to Withdrawal of Government Appointed Commissioners from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

Sarah Champion MP, Member of Parliament for Rotherham has welcomed the announcement that government appointed commissioners are to be withdrawn from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. The withdrawal of commissioners will see full authority returned to the Council. The intervention began in 2015, following severe criticism of the Council in the Jay and Casey reports.

Commenting on the announcement, Sarah said:

“I am pleased that the Government has recognised the significant progress the Council has made and that full democratic authority is to be returned.’

‘Today’s announcement is a testament to the hard work of councillors and council officers and I want to offer my sincere congratulations for the huge improvements that have been delivered in the past three years.’

‘There is still much to do. While there has been undoubted progress, we must be realistic and acknowledge that there is still some way to go to restore public trust.  But I am confident in the ability and the determination of all at RMBC to turn the Council around and to deliver the local government that the people of Rotherham deserve.”
